That is one steep line - the most severe (model) one I've seen.

Modified Regner Lumber Jack I assume?

That's one hell of a modification! I'd worry about operating a boiler out of horizontal when it comes off the rack onto a normal grade, or is it a vertical boiler?

Brian-

I think it is a T boiler, like some of the early US Shay locos.

But still, it has an intenal flue for firing, so it may still have a "dry" spot if the water were to get low.

Yes - that was my concern!

If you ever get stateside, you must visit the Mt. Washington cog railway. The summit is a truly extraordinary place, home of the highest wind speeds ever recorded on earth. And the railroad is a privately owned common-carrier that has been in business steadily for well over 100 years. It's a (long) day trip from Boston, home of the CfR.

Those wind speeds are very apparent from the UTube clip that Laurent (Bearcastle ) posted.
Have they ever had carriages blown off the rails there? Or are they secured to the track in some way? Or perhaps they don't operate in extreme conditions?

Brian,
I think it's the latter. Although it can get down to 0 degrees even in the summer, the extreme winds are not all that regular, and trains probably don't run in the worst conditions. I've never heard of any accidents on the railway.

cheers,
Scot O.
