My garden railway is a fictional one set in Austria, where, as a child on holiday visiting our relatives, I was privileged to see (and hear) U Class and Engerth locos in action on what was then the "Krumpe" line in Wieselburg.
I have since been back and visited again plus a trip to the Mariazellerbahn.
My stock is a mixture of various LGB Austrian outline plus a few German visiting locos.

Pictures to follow..........

Love those Stainz Paul! They look really great together. Is the turntable a scratchbuild?

The turntable is a kitbash of a Hornby OO model.
The size is just right for up to a U Class loco.

Its based on the types they used in Austria - there are a number of photos
on the respective website archives.

To finish it off, I could do with a cast metalpole holder at each end - this was
used by several men to manually push the loco around.

I am on the lookout for a suitable piece of kit to do this. Smile

As always excellent photographs of an excellent garden railway Paul.
I am following a similar theme although I have never been to Austria, (perhaps one day) but it will be mixed in with a French canal.
Just because I fancy the idea.

Mikey

But Mikey, like Paul and Carl, there was a time (in my case about 6 years ago) when all I had was some (modest!) available space, and a madcap notion of running large-scale trains outside!

So don't be daunted - as you say, you're not the only one currently embarking on this adventure, and I'm pretty sure there'll be plenty of advice and encouragement on offer - for my part, I am very much looking forward to you - indeed, all you who are currently in the process of building your lines - sharing your progress with the rest of us!

Go for it Mikey...........it doesn't take long to build up the layout, and there are always parts which need further detailing.
My layout has only been in existence for about 20 months. Smile

The new road crossing between the new conifers has been extended to link up all both of the lower stations.

That is a real empire.

The running permutations are endless. Even with my comparatively simple plan I forget where the trains is going to go.

How much track 'mileage' do you have and what sort of size is your garden or the area that the railway occupies ?

The plan as you see it is approximately 12.0 m wide by 8.0 m deep.

The scale length is about 3 km (450 feet or 140 m in real terms).

I run on DCC, and have had a maximum of 4 trains running simultaneously - three on contiuous runs and one shunting at a station.
About 20 of the 32 sets of points are motorised via DCC, the rest are on spring returns set to the most common running arrangement.

My controller is an LGB 55016 wireless model, I can roam around and control trains and points with this single unit.

Next project.......this will be developed to form "Garsten shed"..........in the real world this was a depot sited up the valley from the station due to space constraints........I have adopted the same criteria, and as it happens, there is no room at my Gstadt station for a loco depot.
