Very interesting if the technology has moved on so far - I think the video is a bit misleading - the "scanning" part could not have allowed for seperate moving parts surely ?
Howsomever - a while back I put up a link for "reprap" which is an open scource project for a home made 3d printer - you can actually buy a kit !!!!!!! This works a bit like a printer having a hot glue gun in it, by moving the gun "head" around it leaves a trail of molten plastic which rapidly hardens. Rather a simple explanation but see this video for a good idea of what it is all about. Remember this does not involve 0000's of $/£, and can be built at home from a kit - after you build you kit you can grow another one - no I am NOT joking. I might have tried if I had the skills with Cad - it really is that cheap.
