Tried my hand at scratchbuilding in brass a East Indian Railways 30" gauge Luggage cum Guards Van from the post war perios, in 16mm=1ft scale. Still a lot to do before it can be tested on the layout. Has 45mm gauge wheelsets.

That's a lot of cut brass Paul, and there are some good features. I like the opening doors with hinges. The roof looks well formed too.

What techniques and tools do you use?

Thanks Carl,
I use a male wooden pattern and a mallet to form the roofs, the channels for the sliding doors are formed on a 2mm thick steel jig fitted to my sheet metal folding machine. The hinges are commercially available 1/2" brass cut & filed to size.

Will be painting & lettering the Van in correct prototype scheme.

I am thinking of batch producing these as my next 16mm scale product provided this one generates enough interest among 16millers.

Paul

Hello Everyone,
Some more progress on my pre-production EIR NG Brass Coach series(Ist, IInd, IIIrd Class & Guards cum Luggage Van) in 1:19 scale.
Finished Etch-priming and applied automobile NC grey primer on the brass surfaces.
Sorry about the image quality, I hate cell phone cameras!!!

These look very good in grey. A nice rake.

What did you use to etch the brass? I've yet to find a perfect way or product.

There some great pictures of Indian Railways including 2'6" gauge on

Looking good, Paul.

The guard looks a lot like GI Joe.

Thanks Gentlemen,
For comercial productions, I generally use a bath with diluted synthetic Vinegar and allow about 30 minutes before throughly washing the items with a light detergent and luke warm water. That takes care of the etch-priming!!

And yes thats my 3 year old daughter's G.I Joe, she insisted we use a military chap for the Guard !
